Summer Learning Journey : Week 1 A place to stand : Day 1 : In The Beginning

Hi bloggers, i have attended the summer learning journey 2018 - 2019. Here are my activity's.

Activity 1: The Legend of New Zealand [4 points] ( To see what the questions are go on the summer learning journey site )
The first fact i liked was number 1 which was, the Maori name of New Zealand is Aotearoa which means the land of the long white cloud. The reason why i like that fact is because it translates what Aotearoa means to those that didn't know.
The second fact i liked was number 4 which was, New Zealanders  are also called kiwis but kiwi is not a not a fruit. It is New Zealand's native flightless bird. The reason i like this fact is because if you come and visit New Zealand someone might ask you are you a kiwi and you might be confused if that makes sense.
The third fact i liked was number 9 which was, The official language is English and Maori. I was really interested in this fact because it tells other ethnicities what New Zealand is.

Activity 2: North and South [4 points]
What i find special/interesting about where i live is that Auckland is really safe and secure. Obviously it's not perfect but i do recommend you should come here. Auckland is safe because not much bad things happen and i got to admit Auckland does have some pretty bomb beaches like they are one of a kind.

Activity 3: Ice, Ice Baby [10 points]

Here is my digital footprint on how to stay smart and safe online.
Make sure you approve the world can see the stuff your sharing.
Also always remember to never use any gang signs (unless their blocked out) as it may be offending to other cultures.
If you post something online remember to make sure you won't regret it in the future!

Thank You For Reading (Special Thanks To Summer Learning Journey Team Members).

  1. Kia ora Luseane,

Congratulations for completing your first day's worth of Summer Learning Journey activities for this year. You have shown great enthusiasm in the programme and I have loved hearing from you via email. You make my day when I see your name pop up. Share your enthusiasm with your friends and drag them along to the Wesley Community Centre in January.

What a cracker of a start to your Summer Learning Journey. You have completed all three activities in one post. What a great idea. I have learnt a lot that I did not think about before reading your post. Such as, you should never put a photo online if you are pulling any gang signs or hand signs as this might be disrespectful to other cultures. That is very true, and something to always consider when online, or in real life. I recently realised that you must always check with someone before posting a picture of them on your blog site. Can you think of another reason why you might not post up a picture?

I also really loved your fact about New Zealand's official languages are English and Maori. You made a good point that this demonstrates that we respect the Maori as the tangata whenua (native people) of New Zealand. However, this was not always the case. In the 1800's, the Maori were not respected as the tangata whenua and soon their language was banned from schools. This almost lead to the Maori language becoming extinct. How devastating would this be for the Maori and their culture. Our country has come a long way to recover the Maori language and fully respect the Maori as tangta whenua. Have you heard about the way the Maori were treated when the British men arrived in New Zealand?

I am so proud of you Luseane, for getting in touch. This meant that our team could support you through the process of starting the Summer Learning Journey. Now look at you go. There is no stopping you now. Toe'umu might have competition this year.

Keep up the incredible work, Luseane,
    Megan :)

    2. Hey Luseane,

Thank you so much for writing back. Yes, you are absolutely right, it is important to get someones permission before posting a picture up of them. I had an important discussion with my family about this on Christmas day as many of my family members post photos up with out checking with one another. It seems that this rule is common knowledge around our younger generation, like you and your friends. However, it is a new concept to my generation and the older generations. Make sure you have this conversation with your whanau as they might not think about this.

Keep up the awesome work Luseane.

      Kindest regards,
      Megan :)

  2. Hi Luseane,
My name is Alex and I am a student from Panmure Bridge school. Well done on finishing the first day of activities. I like the facts that you have gathered about New Zealand. Also, I like how you didn't suger coat your description about New Zealand, as you said it's not perfect but it is a nice place to live. Keep up the good work.
